Repairing the Unrepairable: A Beautiful Medana Tank Watch
A new customer contacted me recently with an apparently “unrepairable” vintage Medana trench watch.
We're a Father (Full-Time) and Son (Part-Time) team who have been repairing watches of all shapes and sizes for over 3 years. Through a shared passion for timepieces of all types we've honed our craft to a point where we're very comfortable to accept all types of watches for customers.
We believe in providing an affordable alternative to expensive Watch Repair and Servicing providers.
We'll take a careful look at your watch in light of any problems you've described. We'll also look for problems that might be coming or issues you haven't spotted
We'll send you a quote to complete the work, itemising any parts we're likely to need based off our initial inspection. Unless we find something we weren't expecting, we'll stick to it
Once you've accepted our quote, we'll proceed with the work and keep you informed every step of the way. We won't do any work you haven't approved, leading to unexpected costs.
If we've repaired or serviced your watch movement, we'll give it a thorough set of tests. We'll test timekeeping accuracy and power reserve over a period of days if necessary. We don't do water resistance testing right now but are hoping to be able to offer this service soon.
Once we're done, we'll let you know, and share with you photos of your completed watch. If we've done a service, we'll share photos of the before and after timekeeping test results and we'll send over your invoice for payment.
With a combination of passion, determination and a burning desire to learn. We've worked as a team solving problems, overcoming challenges and working together at the bench, doing structured online training and reading endless books and blogs about horological theory and practice. But as many a watchmaker will tell you, nothing beats time "on the tools" doing what might seem to many like endlessly boring and repetitive work. We see it like training for any sport or activity; with each repetition you get a little better.
And that's how we've learned. Hour after hour, watch after watch.
Of course, skills have limits, unlike the boundless complexity of watches. Some of the watchmakers we've met with have mastered skills we find tricky and perfected skills we dream one day to acquire. However, in order to provide a good quality service for a mechanical watch, we know what we're doing.
Keep that in mind when making a choice to send your watch to us. The wonderful thing is we know our limits and we'll be quite happy to point you somewhere else if we believe the job you need doing is beyond our skills.
“Having sent many watches to the manufacturers for many years I’d never considered an independent. How wrong have I been… I genuinely wish I’d met him years ago. Nothing was too much trouble, he sent updates daily and photos which I found greatly reassuring. The repairs and service were completed in a very short time scale and returned to me within 9 days. Tim completely overhauled my watch adding several new parts all sourced by him. The price was incredible considering the expertise and time spent. In short if you’re considering any repair or service work Tim is the guy. I will no longer be paying extortionate fees to manufacturers and waiting an age to get my watch back. In short amazing service, incredible expertise and a bargain price. 100% be using Tim for all my watches in the future.”

Here’s what a watch looks like, by the way…
We're bonkers about watches, it's as simple as that. But any item worn for so long, over so many years, has a story. We want to keep that story alive. If we particularly enjoy the story of your watch, we might ask if we can write a post about it to share it with others. We won't do this without your permission, ever.
